Buying back my domain at the regular price.
3/14/2009 20:48
When I go into my account area and then into the "inactive domains" area, I have a domain I wish to re-buy for a year.  The checkbow next to it only allows me the option to "restore."

It then tells me "extend 1 year ($69.25)" but there is not option to buy the domain for the regular price of 9 bucks a year.

Is it possible to buy my domain back at 9 bucks? If not, why is the cost now $69.75 per year? I am confused.

It's also an issue of the Central Registry charging us more to Restore the domain to your account.

u_p_l_corvallis_us:

The domain will be released by the Central Registry 35 days after it was deleted from our system.  You can purchase it for normal price once the domain is deleted.

What is a domain restore? Why does it cost so much in comparison to a domain renewal?

A domain restore is the process of recovering a domain name that

  1. was previously registered through Dynadot,
  2. but was deleted after the expiration of the renewal grace period due to non-renewal by the registrant,
  3. and before it is released to the public for general registration.

All restores include a 1-year renewal.

Why a domain restore costs higher:

  • This is a time-consuming process that is not automated.
  • We have to submit paperwork to complete the restore.
  • The domain has already been deleted. Most of the price you pay goes to the central registry, not us.

Three main periods after the domain expiration:

1. Renewal Grace Period

  • When a domain expires, you can still renew it after the expiration date for a certain renewal grace period (typically 30 days) at the regular renewal price.
  • See our TLD List to find out the renewal grace period of each domain extension.

2. Redemption Period

  • If you don't renew during the renewal grace period, the domain enters the Redemption Period (typically 30 days).
  • At this stage, the domain is deleted from the registry but not yet available for public registration.
  • You can still get it back, but this is called a domain restore.

3. Pending Delete and Release

  • If you don't restore during the redemption period, the domain will be in pending delete period (typically 5 days) and will be fully deleted and released for public registration after this period.

NOTE:

  1. A domain restore is not guaranteed.
  2. Some domain extensions don't support restoration. Please check out the "restore" column within our TLD listing page for more.
  3. A restore order can take up to 24 hours to process.
  4. A domain restore should not be confused with a backordering service. A domain restore is only for our customers who wish to restore a domain they had registered with us, but forgot to renew the domain after it expired.
  5. Most domains may go to our expired auction 30 days after they expire, you can place a bid for a chance to recover the domain. However, recovery is not guaranteed, and once a bid has been placed, the domain can no longer be restored directly to your account.
  6. Learn more about the domain lifecycle.

You domain has passed the time of renewal and is now in redemption.  As Dynadot will have to manually renew the domain for you with the registry this costs Dynadot time, and this is the reason for the larger cost.  It is quite common with many registrars to up the price like this for domains in redemption.  Godaddy charge a lot more I recall from memory.
