Just trying to set up a site here, and found that http://example.com worked, but http://WWW.example.com did not.  I played with the settings and added a redirect(?) A Type from www.example.com to example.com in the DNS tab under Edit Name Server Settings.  

Is this the right way to do this? I'm thinking ahead so that if someone types in the website directly, or links to the www.example.com, it will create problems in properly analyzing traffic sources.

The way you've set it up is fine.

Probably by adding some text to your htaccess file redirecting traffic to www.example.com.
