Name servers problem
2/3/2008 06:47
Hi,
I'm having some problems with name servers.  I recently purchased a domain for a friend, and he gave both both 4 name servers in the form of ns1.blahblah.com, to ns4.blahblah.com.
But he also gave me 4 ip addresses in the form of:

pri: 67.xx.xx.xxx
sec: 66.xxx.x.xxx

tet: 72.xx.xx.xxx
qua: 67.xx.xxx.xx

I've added the nameservers only, and the site is still down (site).  Where should I add those IP's?

It looks like some of your name servers are either not configured to serve your domain or are offline.  You can see this yourself by performing an IP lookup.

What is an IP lookup?

An IP lookup shows the IP status of your domain and will tell you if your changes to the name server settings have been propagated or not.

If it says "Pending Zone Update" at the top, that means your new name server settings have not propagated through the system yet. You will have to wait for your website to become visible.

If there is a "None" in red in any of the entries for your name servers, that means that name server is online, but does not recognize your domain in its domain list. You need to contact your web host and ask them if your domain has been added to the name servers' domain list.

If there is a red "No response" in any of the entries for your name servers, that means the name server is not even accepting web requests and is probably offline. You need to contact your web host and let them know that your name servers are not online.

Find out how to access the IP lookup tool in your Dynadot account.

From Help Section: Account & Domain Management > What is an IP lookup?

How do I access the IP lookup tool?

To do an IP lookup, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Manage Domains" in the drop-down.
  3. Find the domain name you want to check and click on the ellipsis next to the lock icon.
  4. Choose "ip lookup" from the list.

Your page should look like what is shown below:

The IP lookup will load in a new browser tab.

I'm not sure what the 4 IP addresses are for.  Maybe he those are the IP addresses of name servers you can register for yourself?  So, if you have yourdomain.com, you can register 1 IP address to ns1.yourdomain.com.  Steps on how to register your own name servers can be found here:

How do I register my own name servers (glue records)?

Glue records associate a hostname with an IP address. They are needed when you want to set your domain's name servers to a hostname that is a subdomain of your domain.

To create your own name servers for a domain registered at Dynadot, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Name Servers" in the drop-down.
  3. Click on the "Register Name Server" button in the top right corner of the page.
  4. Enter the host name (ns1.mydomain.com, for example) in the text box labeled "Host Name".
  5. Enter the IP address for the name server in the text box labeled "IP Address".
  6. Press the "Register Name Server" button to save your changes.

You can submit either an IPv4 or IPv6 IP address (except .WS domains, which do not support IPv6 addresses). You can also set multiple IP addresses. Please remember to configure your name servers with the corresponding A records. This would be done in your hosting control panel rather than your Dynadot account.

Your settings should look similar to what is shown below:

NOTE: Custom domain name servers (glue records) can only be registered at Dynadot if the domain is registered here. If you are trying to register a name server for ns1.mydomain.com, for example, and mydomain.com is registered with a third party, you would not be able to create glue records with Dynadot.
