Dynadot domain NOT working on GOOGLE APPS - UNRESOLVED
9/9/2009 02:33
I am reposting this as I never got any response under the post I made to an existing thread on this subject.  It has been 1 week since I purchased my domain (orbifish) from Dynadot and to date I have been unable to get a workable answer as to how to get it running on Google Apps.

Below from newest to oldest is the thread from the previous users post along with my comments and specs.  I HAVE to get this resolved FAST as we are going to print with promotional material which will include the URL.

Thanks,
Maxine

Boy - this is really getting frustrating!  I would think by now this would be a simple answer for both Google and Dynadot but appears no one including Dynadot's technical support staff is in sync.

Following is a GoogleApps Forum post and as you can see the  users instructions came from DynaDot.  They direct us to use the 127.0.0.1 - exactly the opposite of what this DynaDot posting tells us to do.  So PLEASE...  I have had this domain for a week now and CAN NOT GET UP AND RUNNING with GOOGLE APPS...

Again, by this time this one should be easy for all the Google and DynaDot techies...  HELP PLEASE.

My domain is:  www.orbifish.com

Thanks,
Maxine

GOOGLE APPS FORUM RESPONSE:
Thank you both for your help. I ended up getting a response from Dynadot help that cleared everything up. I'll post it, maybe someone else having the same problem can use it. Basically, the bare domain incorrectly set to ghs.google.com was the problem. The bare domain needs to be an A entry, not a CNAME, and needs to point to am IP address. I used 127.0.0.1 at Dynadot's suggestion. I'd found conflicting suggestions on the Dynadot help site, some said it should be ghs.google.com and others said the IP address. Setting up your own domain, that has domain hosting at Dynadot, but no file hosting anywhere, and that you want to use your own subdomains as entries to various Google Apps, should use the following settings in Dynadot's 'Advanced Dynadot DNS' section:

Domain Record
(required)
yourdomain.com     A       127.0.0.1

Subdomain Records
www.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com
mail.mydomain.com            CNAME     ghs.google.com
calendar.mydomain.com      CNAME     ghs.google.com
docs.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com
sites.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com

MX Records

Mail Host                        Distance
aspmx.l.google.com           0
alt1.aspmx.l.google.com     1
alt2.aspmx.l.google.com     2

And that should take care of it.

You shouldn't use 127.0.0.1 as your A record since this tells the web browser to visit your own computer to view your webpage.  Any visitor viewing your domain will be redirected to their computer.

If you want to set your DNS to use Google Apps, please follow these steps:

How do I set a Google CNAME record?

To add a Google CNAME record to your domain, please follow these steps:

Log into your Dynadot account.
Click on the "Domains" tab at the top of the page.
Check the box next to the domain name and then press the gray "Set Name Servers" button.
Scroll down to the "Advanced Dynadot DNS" box.
For your first domain record, select "CNAME" as the type and enter "ghs.google.com" as the Target Host.
For your first subdomain record, enter "www" as the subdomain, select "CNAME" as the record type and enter "ghs.google.com" as the Target Host.
Press the gray "Use Dynadot DNS" button.

Your settings should look similar to what is shown here.

Please note, it might take some time for your changes to propagate.

The "name.ext" is used on the page where you set your default name server setting for new domain registrations. You would get to the name server settings for a specific domain from the "Manage Domain Names" page.

How do I set up DNS for my domain?

To set up DNS for your domain, please follow the steps listed below:

Log into your Dynadot account.
Click on the "Domains" tab in the main menu. This takes you to the Manage Domain Names page.
Click on the link listed in the "Name Server" column. After the page loads, you should see your current name server choice close to the top of the page.
Scroll down to the "Advanced Dynadot DNS" box.
Select the Record Type, then enter in the IP Address or Target Host of your web server in the first text box.
If you have an Email Server or MX Record available for your domain email, enter in the hostname and the distance (otherwise known as priority) in the subsequent text boxes. You can also specify subdomain A records, CNAME records, email aliases (in the "Email Forwarding Settings" box), and a TXT record.
Click the "Use Dynadot DNS" button to save your changes.
Please be aware that it might take some time for your changes to propagate.

I have read all comments in this forum regarding setting CNAME & MX records to use email when no web hosting domain is available.
There's one issue that I'm having and am not seeing it resolve in this fourm

Under the Advanced section to set CNAME and Target host instructions are as follows:
==========================
Domain Record
(required)
      yourdomain.com     CNAME       ghs.google.com
-----------------------------

My problem is were "yourdomain.com" in Domain Record should be my url, but currently it reads "name.ext" and there's no field to enter my url.

Any helps would be appreciated.

THANK YOU!!!

Now I feel like we are getting somewhere - I appreciate it really.  I will make the changes as you suggested and wait at least 48 hours to see if they resolve the problem.  I will let you know.

Thanks again,
Maxine

I just noticed something different on your DNS settings.  In your Advanced DNS box, you have entered the subdomains as "www.domain.com," "mail.domain.com," etcetera.  You only need to enter the actual subdomain, "www," "mail," "calendar."  You don't need to include your domain name.

Google should also give you a verification string for your domain.  The verification string will look something like "googlefffggghhh12345" and the Target Host for that subdomain should point to google.com.

Once you make the changes, check the following link to see if the red "none" changes into "ghs.google.com:"

http://www.dynadot.com/domain/ip.html

Once the DNS changes, log into your Google Apps account.  I believe there should be a link in your account so that you can try to verify again.  Follow the steps to verify.

It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days for them to verify your account, so don't make any DNS changes.

First off, thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, however, my domain has been sitting with these exact settings for almost 48 hours until just this morning I changed them back to CNAME with ghs.google.com.  After receiving your message just now I have reverted the settings.  I expect they will not work... there is no reason why they should now since they didn't before.

So, if I understand you correctly, you are now telling me to contact Google.?  Please confirm.

I am sure you can imagine just how frustrating this situation is. Google and Dynadot are leaders in this area and MANY people buy from you and host on them... why is this still an open issue?  This lack of ability to resolve this issue and ball tossing from Google to Dynadot is not only a waste but makes one want to move to other options altogether.

Please reply to my request to confirm your intention to send me to Google.

Regards,
Maxine

Did you email us about this issue?

Your settings should look similar to those you've quoted above:

Domain Record
(required)
yourdomain.com     A       127.0.0.1

Subdomain Records
www.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com
mail.mydomain.com            CNAME     ghs.google.com
calendar.mydomain.com      CNAME     ghs.google.com
docs.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com
sites.mydomain.com           CNAME     ghs.google.com

MX Records

Mail Host                        Distance
aspmx.l.google.com           0
alt1.aspmx.l.google.com     1
alt2.aspmx.l.google.com     2

Our previous advice against using the IP address 127.0.0.1 is correct, however, since Google Apps will not verify your account if you use a CNAME for your required record, Google Apps users are forced to use an IP address in our system for that record.

You can also try looking up one of Google Apps IP addresses and using that instead of 127.0.0.1.  In the past, they have let their customers connect directly to an IP address, however, that might not be the case at this time.
