How to check domain & its history

Hy,
My friend reacently bought domain,, that looks like it was in google sand box, so now it is useless. So I wonder how can you check its history?.
Also is there any tool you can check it is in sandbox, or somehow penelized?

There are a few 3rd party sites that will allow you to check a domains history, at least in part. The first one that comes to mind is DomainTools.
