Email forwarding?
10/2/2009 23:01
I have a couple domains with DynaDot. Most of them I have hosted on one virtual private server.

Currently, I have email forwarding set up on my host. For each of my domains, I have a catch-all that forwards all email to my gmail account.

But the other day, my host was offline for 15 hours, and any email going through the host didn't arrive. I don't want this to happen again.

Is there a way I can set up the email forwarding directly in my DynaDot control panel? I want DynaDot to forward my email, but I want visitors to my website to still see my host.

I tried following the steps, but this error appeared. Is there any way I could fix It?.

Cannot set email forwarding settings. Email Settings cannot be used with Custom DNS.

Hello,

If you have basic hosting on the domain you get unlimited email addresses.

Best Regards,

Since you apparently want all your mail at gmail you don't need any forwarding.

Instead you can point your MX records directly to gmail. That way your mail will never hit any other servers than google's.

You might have to convert your gmail account to a google apps account, but those are free too. I am doing it on google apps. See http://google.com/a.

Your host should give you an IP address that you can use to connect to their server.  Once you have that, you can follow the steps shown here to set up your Advanced DNS settings:

How do I set up DNS for my domain?

To set up DNS for your domain, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Manage Domains" in the drop-down.
  3. Check the box next to your domain name(s) and click on the "Action" button.
  4. Choose "DNS Settings" from the "Action" list.
  5. On the DNS Settings page, select the "Dynadot DNS" setting from the top drop-down menu.
  6. Choose the "Record Type" you want to use from the drop-down menu, then enter the IP Address or Target Host of your web server in the text box.
  7. If you have an Email Server or MX Record available for your domain email, enter the priority (otherwise known as distance) and the hostname in the subsequent text boxes.
  8. You can also specify subdomain records in the "Subdomain Records(optional)" section the same way you do to the "Domain Record(optional)".
  9. Press the "Save Settings" button to save your changes.

Please be aware that it might take some time for your name server changes to propagate.

There are certain steps for each record type as well, the most common are:

A record:

CNAME:

MX record:

TXT Record:

DKIM:

SPF:

Note: If you have been instructed to add an "@", this simply means that the record should be entered under the "Domain Record (optional)" section. The "@" itself should not be entered.
From Help Section: Account & Domain Management > Domain Settings > How do I set up DNS for my domain?

You can skip step 6.

Once you do that, you can add your email aliases by following these steps:

How do I set up email forwarding?

Every domain registered at Dynadot comes with free email forwarding. Email forwarding allows you to receive email to an address on your domain name, for example, [email protected]. The email is forwarded to an existing email, such as your Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or other email.

To set up email forwarding for your domain, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Manage Domains" in the drop-down.
  3. Check the box next to your domain name(s) and click on the "Action" button.
  4. Choose "Email Settings" from the "Action" list.
  5. On the "Email Settings" page, select the "Forwarding Email" setting from the top drop-down menu.
  6. Enter the email address you want for your domain email in the "Username" column (you do not need to enter the full email address such as [email protected], only the "admin" part should be entered from this example).
  7. Enter an existing email address that you want your email forwarded to in the "Existing Email Address" column.
  8. If you would like to create additional aliases, click on the "Add Email" button.
  9. Press the "Save Email Settings" button to save your changes.

Your settings should look similar to what is shown below:

Another way to set up email forwarding is through Dynadot DNS on the DNS Settings page.

You can specify up to 10 different email addresses to have forwarded. If you want to have catch all email forwarding, enter an asterisk * as the email username. There are also some additional limits to our email forwarding.
NOTE: Setting up "Forwarding Email" here will disconnect your domain with the "Dynadot Email Hosting" if you have set it up. Learn how to set up email forwarding in Dynadot Email plan.

Can you explain how to do this? I don't understand what you mean - "Set your site to use Dynadot DNS, and set the IP address to your webhosts ip address".

Yes, you can do that, but it may not be an optimal solution.

Set your site to use Dynadot DNS, and set the IP address to your webhosts ip address. Then add Dynadot email forwarding to your domain.

This will work as long as your host does not move your domain to a new ip address.
