No more grace deletions?
7/4/2008 21:33
I've recently received this mail:

You are receiving this email because you have grace deleted a new domain before, or because you are a bulk customer.

Recently ICANN changed the rules for grace deletions of new domains. For every domain registered, Dynadot pays a $0.20 fee to ICANN. (This fee is included in the price you pay to us.) Previously, this fee was refunded to us if the domain was grace deleted in the 5 day window. However, ICANN will now charge the fee even if the domain is deleted.

Effective immediately Dynadot can no longer offer grace deletions. Any new domain registrations must be kept for the full year. Domains registered July 4 or earlier can still be grace deleted for free.

Notes:
(1) This change only applies to COM, NET, INFO, ORG, MOBI, ASIA, NAME.
(2) We may introduce grace deletions for these tlds again later, but with a deletion fee.
(3) For more info please see: http://gnso.icann.org/issues/domain-tasting/domain-tasting-board-report
-gnso-council-25apr08.pdf

I'm very disappointed because of this decision. Why not asking the $0.20 for grace deletions? It's acceptable.

Please consider this.

I know many domainers here because of the grace deletions, now you are about to loose them including me.

As a small bulk customer I am happy to see the deletion are back however I do think Dynadot should consider charging more for this service here's why.

I noticed the status page state that ORG Deletion Rate So Far This Month are at 73.50% this is a LOT clearly blind tasting (maybe I am wrong..)

I think that asking more would force bulk taster to re-think their strategies, it would also be move in the same direction the ICANN is pushing.

Even a .50 cent would be reasonable considering we would still be saving money instead of keeping a useless domain name, to the very least Dynadot should consider pulling money from this direction instead of increasing regular registration fee.

Awesome! Dynadot is back at the top of my favorite registrars list. Thank you so much for offering it again so promptly! We appreciate your hard work!

Ok, we have added grace deletions back to our system. Now there is a $0.20 fee. Thank you for the feedback.

I agree with most people here. I have spent almost 10k with dynadot as well, and I expect more from them.

TOP PRIORITY: Enable us to grace delete domains for the 20c per name fee.

I'm just feeling a little sick, as I just got the email moments ago about the change, and I already had tested $1000 in domains today which now can not be grace deleted.  I have spent over $10,000 into my dynadot account.  I hope someone gets back to me on this issue to allow me to get rid of these worthless domains at least for a portion of my $1000 back.

While I understand it's not Dynadot's decision, they should have given at least 24 hours prior to the change.

Here is an excerpt of the PDF from ICANN, page 4 & 5:
(Date: 25th April!)

"The .Com agreement requires that "the Registry Operator shall be afforded A REASONABLE PERIOD OF TIME following notice of the establishment of a Consensus Policy or Temporary Specification or Policies in which to comply with such policy or specification, taking into account any urgency involved."

Well, I don't consider "with immediate effect" as being a reasonable period of time.

I purchased a bunch of domains not for the purpose to keep them but I wanted to test them, just like I used to do before. I did that around the same time this email was sent.

Not informing your membership about the sudden change while Dynadot knew it was underway since end of April, is shady business in my book, to say the least.
Moreover, I contacted Dynadot's staff 2 days ago, I had a question about grace deletion and there was clearly no indication of a coming change in their reply.

I wouldn't mind paying 20 cent/domain if I get a refund. We should be given the opportunity to adapt to the new policies.

Very unhappy, not about ICANN's decision, but about the way Dynadot is handling the situation. It seems that making profits is more important than business ethics.
