Hi,

what's the maximum number of backorders one can place?

is there a way too raise that number?

Yes,  there is a limit on the number of backorders that can be placed from your account.  If your account is at 'regular' pricing status,  the limit is 10.  If your account has 'bulk' pricing status,  the limit is 50 and with 'super bulk',  500.
