2 domain names, one website
4/5/2011 07:01
I have 2 domain names. 1 is already with dynadot with advanced web hosting. 1 is on the process of being transferred to dynadot.

Now I want the 2 domains go to the same website. What is the best way to do this? I tried doing this a long time ago ending up buying something I didn't need.

Any advise?

Hello,

You can use either regular forwarding or stealth forwarding, depending on your preference.

How do I set up domain forwarding?

What is domain forwarding?

Domain forwarding is the process of redirecting a website visitor to another domain name prior to the initial webpage loading. This will prevent the user from visiting the original URL destination, and will instead forward them to a specified web address.

To set up domain forwarding on any of your domain names, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Dynadot account.
  2. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Manage Domains" in the drop-down.
  3. Check the box next to your domain name(s) and click on the "Action" button.
  4. Choose "DNS Settings" from the "Action" list.
  5. On the DNS page, select the "Dynadot Forwarding" setting from the top drop-down menu.
  6. Enter the URL of the page you wish to forward to, following the format of the example given.
  7. Choose 302 Redirect or 301 Redirect (See the differences)
  8. Press the "Forward Domain" button to save your changes.

Please be aware that it might take some time for your name server changes to propagate.

Another way to set up forwarding is through Dynadot DNS on the DNS Settings page:

How do I set my domain to stealth forwarding?

To set your domain to stealth forwarding, please follow these steps:

  5. On the DNS page, select the "Stealth Forwarding" setting from the top drop-down menu.
  6. Enter the URL of the web page you wish to stealth forward to, following the format of the example given. You may also enter the Title of the website here.
  7. Press the "Stealth Forward Domain" button to save your changes.

NOTE:

  1. Modern browsers often switch to HTTPS automatically when you input a domain name. If your forwarding URL points to an HTTP site, the browser may attempt to access the HTTPS version, which can lead to excessive redirects and make the site inaccessible. To avoid this issue, ensure your forwarding URL is set to HTTPS.
  2. It might take some time for your name server changes to propagate
  3. There are some drawbacks to using stealth forwarding.

What is stealth forwarding?

Stealth forwarding is similar to domain forwarding except the domain name stays in the web browser's URL bar instead of being replaced by the new page's URL. This is is why it is called "stealth" forwarding because it appears that the web page displayed is actually part of the domain.

So, say that you have a domain named myexample.org, and you want to use stealth forwarding to have your domain point to https://name.somedomain.com. When you use stealth forwarding, https://www.myexample.org will load the index page located at https://name.somedomain.com, however the https://www.myexample.org address will be displayed in the web browser's URL bar instead of the https://name.somedomain.com address.

Stealth forwarding only affects the domain itself. If you want to set up email forwarding with your domain, that is done separately.

Dynadot provides domain forwarding, stealth forwarding, and email forwarding free of charge when you register or transfer a domain name to us.
