Why can't I set a domain record to redirect to an IP/subfolder ?

for example I want http://website.com/ to go to http://123.123.123.123/subfolder

Usually on your host, you can set up sub-domains that refer to a subfolder, that include subdomains, such as <name>.<domainname>.com

If you do this, you can set up a CNAME record that points to the site as shown in thist post:

A records only go to IP addresses.  Once you add /subfolder, it is no longer an IP address.

The only way you'd be able to forward to that URL is by using either Dynadot Forwarding or Stealth Forwarding.
